The Greenman is a potent symbol and is becoming encouragingly popular. This has given birth to some really cracking artistic greenmen. The one I've used in my resistance is fertile idea (above) is sublime and has been around for ages. The artist remains an enigma. Whoever they are I'm extremely grateful to them. I've had this greenman on my bedroom wall for years
But profoundly powerful as he is, the Greenman is still the GreenMAN!
Gaian Spirituality must be balanced. We need the other half of the sky! To be truly transformative it must transcend the male domination of established religion and culture. |
Fem-gaia. |
I've included several of my favourite Gaias below. The first is the wonderful Bamberg greenman circa early 13th century, with his famous watchful sideways glance.
I'm found in many a church but nary a bible. The greenshoots of something profound, cherished and undeniable pushing up between the flagstones... |
Very fond of this. He looks a bit like a teddy bear or maybe the lion in Wizard of Oz |
The name Glasgow is thought to derive from Glas chu-'Beloved Green place" It's certainly beloved by me! |
Apart from family photos, this Greenman is my most treasured possession. Made by my friend Debbie for my 40th birthday. |
Boo!! |
A real character: like Fagin in Oliver Twist. |
A bit like a grumpy green cabbage but still good. |
He looks a bit like Willy Nelson. |
Greenlady? |
And another female of the species. |
Male ,female, both? |
Superb!...as good as 'resistance is fertile' |
Scottish Greenman. |
A very classical look to this one. |
From Dunblane Cathedral |
From Dore Abbey , Herefordshire |
Blissed out, Zen or maybe just stoned?...................................and for contrast-Fierce! |
